Drivers on Route 50 might notice an increased police presence Wednesday morning.
Maryland State Police have announced a crackdown along Route 50 for HOV lane violators. Traffic cams have already shown a number of cars pulled over before 7 a.m.
Police said the stepped-up enforcement is in response to a number of citizen complaints. They said they will be "saturating" Route 50 from Route 301 to I-495 with additional troopers.
The HOV restrictions along the 7.5 mile stretch of HOV lanes on Rt. 50 are in operation 24-hours-a-day. Motorists who violate the HOV laws will be charged with failing to obey a traffic control device and/or changing lanes where prohibited by a traffic control device. Both charges carry a penalty of a $90 fine and one point each.
