A D.C. Council member wants to make sure that children don't give up their right to digital privacy when they step inside city schools.
Independent Council member David Grosso introduced a bill on Tuesday that he says would protect students' privacy. Among other things, it would bar school officials from demanding that students share information from their personal smartphones or protected social media accounts, even if students are using the devices in violation of school policy. It would also bar schools from tracking students with devices given to them for overnight or home use.
The bill is part of a national push to protect digital privacy. Similar legislation is being introduced in 15 states. Grosso and supporters will discuss the bill at a news conference Wednesday.
