The D.C. area is getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Thursday is the start of Chinese New Year, and celebrations are planned at different locations throughout the area.

On Saturday, the Smithsonian's Sackler and Freer galleries (1050 Independence Ave.), which hold Asian art collections, will host tours, cooking demonstrations and book readings.

On Sunday at 2 p.m., a parade in D.C.'s Chinatown will feature dragon dancers, high school bands, and cultural groups. The Chinatown Community Cultural Center will also host a variety of groups and activities from noon to 5 p.m., including demonstrations of traditional Chinese calligraphy, crafts for kids and kung fu and tai chi demos.
