Bus Headed to National Zoo Overturns

A charter bus filled with children flipped onto its side Thursday morning in Queen Anne's County, Md.

The Queen Anne's County Fire Department said the bus overturned at Route 213 and White Marsh Road in the Church Hill area around 8:45 a.m., WBAL-TV reported.

Officials said that 35 people were on the bus that was headed to the Smithsonian National Zoo from Worton Elementary School in Kent County, Md.

Maryland State Police said a 2010 Volkswagen Toureg traveling on White Marsh Road attempted to pull out and make a left turn onto Route 213. Police said the Toureg pulled out in front of the tour bus, the bus driver, 86-year-old Curtis Dorsey, who owns the tour bus company, saw the SUV and attempted to avoid a crash. It hit a utility pole and flipped over. It was a slow roll in a ditch, Derrick Ward reported

Seventeen people, including the driver of the SUV, were transported to local hospitals, including four or five adults. One of those adults, 25-year-old Rebecca Todd, was flown by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma, where she is said to be in stable condition.

The driver of the Toureg, 49-year-old Carl Trenz Jr., also was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Charges are pending.
