Area Jurisdictions Want Stimulus Bucks for Foreclosure-Hampered Hoods

DC area asks for stimulus funds for neighborhoods

WASHINGTON -- Officials from the D.C. region are asking for stimulus money to help neighborhoods that have been hit hard by foreclosures.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and six DC-area jurisdictions are applying for funds through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which is part of the federal stimulus program. The group has identified 60 areas that would benefit from the grants.

The effort is targeting neighborhoods that are still struggling even as much of the region improves, said Paul DesJardin.

Prince William County, Alexandria, Bowie, Fairfax County, Gaithersburg and Prince George's County have joined together to apply for $39.4 million.
