Tree Decides It Won't be Long

Cherry blossoms may bloom sooner than expected

The Autumn Flowering Cherry tree on Ohio Drive in the District has made an announcement.  Or rather, its blooms have.

And the National Park Service says the predictor tree, which is in full bloom, means the more famous cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin will be in full bloom a few days before experts originally predicted.

"I watched the buds. ...I thought they'd be a little further behind than they are now, but they're moving, so the peak period is probably going to be from the 1st to the 4th of April," said Robert DeFeo, head horticulturalist for the National Park Service.

The change in the peak bloom prediction should not change visitors' plans.  The Cherry Blossom Festival runs through April 12.
