Teen Gets 7 Years for Shooting Friend

A Frederick teen will spend seven years behind bars for shooting his friend in the chest last December.

According to Charles Smith, State's Attorney for Frederick County, Md. Gray was sentenced to 25 years in jail on charges of first degree assault. All but seven of those years were suspended, and Gray faces three years of supervised probation.

Smith said Gray was playing video games with two of his friends Dec. 19, 2012 at his house on Hillcrest Drive in Frederick. Another friend called Gray, letting him know he was coming over.

The friend, 16, knocked on the door several times, without Gray answering. Gray then got annoyed with the knocking, Smith said, grabbed a .32 caliber semi-automatic handgun and opened the door.

He then shot his friend in the chest. Smith said Gray thought the gun was not loaded. After the shooting, Gray handed the gun off to one of his friends who fled the scene.

The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. However, the bullet remains in his chest and he requires further surgery.

Gray pleaded guilty June 6.
