Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting of 55-Year-Old Man in Takoma Neighborhood in D.C.

A suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a 55-year-old man in Northwest D.C. over the weekend.

Dejuan Etheridge, 27, is charged with first-degree murder while armed in the killing of Uyer Barnard Hooper, a Northwest D.C. resident.

Shortly after 3:20 a.m. Sunday, police were called to the 6400 block of 7th Street NW in the Takoma neighborhood for the report of a shooting, and found Hooper suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Another man was also shot and was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle. Police say his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police developed Etheridge as a suspect within hours of the shooting, they said. Police have not disclosed a motive for the slaying.

Hooper was one of three people killed in D.C. over the weekend, bringing the District's homicide count to 108 this year. There were 105 homicides in all of 2014.

On Saturday night, police found the body of a man in a burned-out car in the 400 block of Xenia Street SE. Investigators later determined that the man died of a gunshot wound. He has not yet been identified.

On Friday night, a 22-year-old man was killed and two others were injured in the Langdon neighborhood of Northeast D.C.
