Service Remembers Victims of Sept. Medevac Crash

CAPITAL HEIGHTS, Md. -- An emotional memorial service honored the lives of the men and women lost in a Maryland State Police helicopter crash in September.

Jordan Wells, the only sole survivor of the crash, was among those honoring the men and women who lost their lives when the chopper went down in Walker Mill Regional Park in District Heights. Also attending was State Police Sgt. Mike Perkins, who was among the first to find the downed chopper and Wells, who was hanging on to life in the mangled wreckage. Perkins said the crash site has a special place in many hearts.

Tuesday's ceremony was highlighted by bagpipes and a flyover by a Maryland State Police helicopter. The names of all EMS workers who died in the line of duty last year were read.

More than 100 cyclists on a journey from New York to the National EMS Memorial in Roanoke, Va., stopped at the ceremony to honor those lost.

After the service, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the crash site deep in the woods at a temporary memorial bearing the names and photos of those who died and the survivor, Jordan Wells. She was well enough to walk with assistance to the memorial and honor those who made their final flight with her.

The names of the rescue workers who lost their lives will be added to the National EMS Memorial on Saturday.
