Rockfish OK to Eat 3 Times a Month

Maryland environmental officials are increasing their recommendations about how much rockfish it is safe to eat.

Three meals a month is OK, according to state officials. That's for the general population and for smaller striped bass caught in the Chesapeake Bay.

Under the old guidelines, only two meals per month were recommended.

The state also no longer recommends that women and children avoid certain striped bass.

The guidelines are based on new test results and are being released as the rockfish season prepares to open on Saturday.

The Maryland Department of the Environment said the two main contaminants in rockfish are PCBs and methylmercury.

Cutting out fatty sections where contaminants are highest can help reduce exposure, officials said.
