River Road to Reopen New Year's Day

Broken water main flooded stretch of road in Bethesda last week

BETHESDA, Md. -- Road will reopen in Bethesda Thursday morning after repairs to a water main that broke and flooded a stretch of the road last week.

Gov. Martin O'Malley and Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett were among the officials gathered to make the announcement Wednesday afternoon. Earlier Wednesday, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission reported plans to reopen the road Wednesday evening.

WSSC crews replaced 80 feet of pipe in the 8500 block of River Road and planned to fill the hole Wednesday.

The 66-inch water main broke the morning of Dec. 23, flooding the road and stranding several motorists. Nine people were rescued from their vehicles.

The cause of the break is under investigation.
