Internet Spells Doom for Md. Report Card Hiders

'Half of the time, I know what grade my daughter got...before she does'

Remember the days when you could hide a bad report card from your parents

Well, put away that forging pen and weep.

Online, Internet-based grading programs like SchoolMax or EdLine, that are being installed and/or updated in a number of Maryland schools, let your parents log in and get the news before you do.

"Half of the time, I know what grade my daughter got on something before she does," Susan Young, mother of an eighth-grader in Montgomery County, said.

She receives e-mail alerts every day for every one of her daughter's grades in any class. "You can get a little obsessive about it," she said as a warning to parents who are heavily involved in or controlling their children's lives.

Other features include letting students and parents talk to teachers digitally in chat rooms and download homework assignments.

And what if the dog ate your homework?  You can also find out how missing assignments affect your total grade.

Yes, it's the end of the world as we knew it.  Thank God we're done with school.
