Police Search for Witnesses in Crash That Killed Prince George's County Officer

Police are searching for anyone who may have witnessed a crash that killed a Prince George’s County police officer early Saturday morning.

Officer Brennan Rabain, 26, was attempting a traffic stop in the area of Copernicus Drive in Lanham, Maryland, when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a fence.

Rabain had been with the department for less than two years.

Prince George’s County Police are considering a change to the policy that allows civilians to be in cars driven by off-duty officers. This follows the crash that killed Police Officer Brennan Rabain.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police hope to speak to anyone in a tour bus and a minivan seen driving near the cruiser shortly before the crash. Police Chief Mark Magaw says the dashboard camera in the cruiser was broken.

Police say Rabain was driving his girlfriend home in his cruiser at the time of the crash. She suffered minor injuries in the crash, including shock, News4's Darcy Spencer said. The woman, who has not been identified, was hospitalized.

Rabain had been off duty, but when he initiated the traffic stop, he went back on duty, police said. Officials say he did not violate protocol by having someone in the cruiser with him.

Magaw says the department is reviewing its policy allowing passengers in take-home vehicles while officers are off duty.

Rabain left behind a 3-year-old daughter, police said. His fellow officers have established a GoFundMe site to assist the family; click here for details.
