Parkway Road Conditions Causing Safety Concerns

Area parkways in D.C., Maryland and Virginia are falling into disrepair, and the U.S. Park police union president blames maintenance concerns.

Drivers along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway are having a hard time staying in their proper lanes. Lane striping has worn away or is difficult to see, and potholes have torn away from roadway marks.

Those who drive along the Clara Barton Parkway and the George Washington Parkway are also noticing the deteriorating road conditions. All three roads fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. National Park Service.

Ian Glick, president of the park police union, said the potholes are a major safety concern.

“Many cars hit these potholes, rendering their cars disabled,” Glick said. “You obscure your visibility, compounded with lack of rain markings, it could be something deadly.”

Glick said the biggest issues is funding for road repairs. The National Park Service said that is true, but they have put together a multi-year plan to repair many of the issues on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

However, a spokesperson said the repairs along the B-W Parkway won’t happen immediately and said repairs are being done in stages, which will take years to complete. The spokesperson said a new striping project on the B-W Parkway is scheduled to begin this summer.
