A Newport News sixth-grader is in police custody after school officials found a loaded handgun in his belongings.
Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston says there were no threats or injuries.
Officials at Dozier Middle School recovered the .22-caliber handgun Wednesday morning after other students reported it to an administrator, Michelle Price with Newport News Public Schools told WAVY-TV. The loaded gun was given to a school resource officer.
Price says the student was arrested.
Principal Lisa Gatz sent a voicemail to parents notifying them about the incident.
