Firefighters Battle Multiple Brush Fires Along I-270

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue battled multiple brush fires along I-270 Tuesday afternoon.

The fires were extinguished shortly before 4:30 p.m.

Located between Route 355 and Old Georgetown Road in northern Bethesda and southern Rockville, the blaze continues to snarl the evening commute for drivers on the Beltway, I-270, Wisconsin Avenue and Grosvenor Lane.

At one point, flames had spread along the shoulder of I-270 into a wooded area near some townhouses and apartments.

Fire Chief Richard Bowers called the effort "very labor intensive." He told News4's Jackie Bensen that many firefighters were on the scene, and the department had to bring in tanker trucks.

Since there are still a lot of dry leaves on the ground, firefighters plan to stay in the area overnight to make sure the fires won't re-ignite.

There is no word yet on what started the fires.
