Mom Falsely Reported Her Toddler Son Was Taken With Car, Police Say

Baltimore Police say a woman made up a story that her 2-year-old son was taken with her car in hopes of getting her stolen car back faster.

The toddler was safe at daycare the whole time, police spokesman T.J. Smith said Friday.

Police said earlier in the day that that the boy's mother reported that she left her car running with the boy inside, then saw a man drive off. About an hour after police alerted media, the department tweeted that the boy was safe.

Smith said the woman's car was indeed stolen, but the rest of the story was a hoax aimed at finding the car more quickly. He said the search required extraordinary resources, and authorities will charge the mother with making a false statement and alert social services.
