Md. Senate Adds Schools to Speed Camera Bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Maryland Senate has amended a bill to expand the potential use of speed cameras to schools in addition to highway work zones.

The change will help prevent accidents and injuries near schools, the amendments supports said. The measure, which the Senate gave preliminary approval to on Tuesday, would allow speed cameras within half a mile of a school.

That will end up allowing speed cameras in residential areas, opponents said. The legislation goes too far and amounts to a new way for counties to raise money off residents, they said.

Fines would be $40.
