Man Found Shot on Sidewalk in Prince George's County

A young man was fatally shot in a quiet Prince George's County neighborhood Sunday afternoon. News4's Darcy Spencer has the story. (Published Sunday, July 28, 2019)

A quiet neighborhood in Prince George's County was shattered by gunshots in the middle of the afternoon Sunday, police said.

A young man was found suffering from gunshot wounds on a sidewalk in the 4000 block of 21st Place in Temple Hills, Maryland, around 2:30 p.m. He died from his injuries, police said.

Police identified the victim on Monday as 31-year-old Kirk Jacques Francois Lyles of no fixed address.

"My granddaughter, I told her to call [911] after I'd seen the body across the street," a neighbor said. "After that, I just went into a little panic, you know? I was scared."

The shooting was a surprise to some residents in the neighborhood, who said it was usually a quiet place to live.

"It sounded like three shots, pow pow pow. I told my niece, it sounds like somebody's shooting," another neighbor said. "I've been here 40 years, and we haven't had any problems here."

It is currently unknown whether the victim was targeted, and the shooter's motive is unclear, police said. Detectives are working to identify a suspect or suspects.

Some neighbors who saw the victim before he was taken into an ambulance said they didn't recognize him from the neighborhood.

Police are looking for any home security camera video that may have captured the murder.

"This neighborhood seems pretty quiet, pretty quaint," said Officer Nicholas Clayton. "It's a Sunday afternoon, broad daylight, pretty bold to conduct such a crime."
