Monsignor Leonard Hurley, Montgomery County Priest, Dies

Hurley was namesake of well-known Father Hurley Boulevard

Monsignor Leonard Hurley, a beloved and prominent priest in the D.C. area, has died at age 84.

He was the namesake of the well-known Father Hurley Boulevard in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Hurley died earlier this week, the Archdiocese of Washington confirmed Friday.

Hurley moved to the area in 1973 and started Mother Seaton Catholic Church in a two-bedroom house. The congregation later moved to its current location on Middlebrook Road and what is now called Father Hurley Boulevard.

Hurley was reassigned in 1987. Around that time, the county was scheduled to extend Germantown Drive to I-270. Hurley's parishioners asked that the road be renamed to honor Hurley's "ecumenical and civic work," according to Patch.com. The county eventually approved their request.

Plans for a public memorial have not been announced.
