FRONT ROYAL, Va. -- Virginia State Police said officers shot and killed a motorist during a traffic stop along Skyline Drive.
Sgt. Les Tyler said the shooting occurred at 11 a.m. Sunday at the scenic highway's north entrance at Front Royal.
Tyler said the National Park Service called for assistance in stopping a vehicle. State Police and the Warren County Sheriff's Department responded.
Tyler said as officers approached the vehicle, gunfire erupted. The driver of the vehicle died at the scene and a passenger was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Tyler said their names weren't immediately being released.
Tyler said the FBI is investigating. FBI spokeswoman Dee Rybiski in Richmond said no further details are being released.
