DC Police Identify Man Fatally Shot by Officer

The Metropolitan Police Department have identified the man shot and killed by an officer after he confronted the officer with a large knife and another sharp object.

In a news release on Friday, police identified the man as Darick Napper, 34, of Washington.

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon in northeast Washington.

Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown said the officer was called to investigate a report of a man armed with a knife. Police said in a statement that the man was carrying ``a large, hunting-style knife along with a second edged weapon'' and that the man confronted the officer.

Police say the officer fired once in self-defense. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The shooting is under investigation.
