Councilman Says He's a Cop; Cops Say No

Police: Md. town councilman impersonated officer

OXON HILL, Md. -- A Fairmount Heights town councilman had a gun, bulletproof vest, police radio and several law enforcement badges when he was arrested over the weekend outside a crowded go-go dance, according to the Washington Post.

Nathaniel Mines Jr., who has served as an elected council member for eight years, was charged by Prince George's County Police with impersonating a police officer and possessing a firearm.

This wasn't the first time Mines was in this situation. In 1996, he was charged with impersonating an officer, but that charge was later dropped.

Police said Mines told officers early Saturday that he was an off-duty Fairmount Heights officer working security at the Knights of Columbus hall in Oxon Hill. Officials said he also had red and blue police lights inside a black Cadillac Escalade he was driving.

Mines said he was appointed police commissioner several years ago and was lawfully carrying a badge and gun.

But county police and Fairmount Heights Police Chief Wendell Brantley disagree, saying Mines can't call himself the police commissioner.
