A two-alarm fire at a commercial building outside one entrance of the Van Ness Metro station has been extinguished, D.C. Fire and EMS said.

Eighty firefighters were brought in for what fire officials called a "labor-intensive" operation Wednesday at 4301 Connecticut Ave. NW, a commercial building above a plaza with a CVS and a Giant grocery store.

Two civilians were taken to a hospital, D.C. Fire and EMS officials said. One person had a minor injury due to a fall, and a maintenance worker was taken for observation.

The blaze generated considerable smoke and heat on the upper floors of the 6-story building, officials said. Around 10 a.m., fire units were aggressively attacking the blaze, fire officials said said. The fire was found in an upper-level boiler room and had spread to the walls. Firefighters extinguished visible flames within an hour.

The building is near the east entrance of the Van Ness Metro station.

It's unclear how the fire started.
