“People's Garden” Blooms in Columbia Heights

Students from a neighborhood school will be planting berry bushes Thursday

A new community garden is being planted in Washington's Columbia Heights neighborhood as part of a federal initiative.

The first plants will go in the ground Thursday at the new “People's Garden” at 16th and Irving Streets, Northwest.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack launched the People’s Garden Initiative in 2009. It encourages communities to create gardens to help the environment and bring people together.

The garden in Columbia Heights will include gathering space, flowering plants and fruits and vegetables. Students from a neighborhood school will be planting berry bushes Thursday and working with a USDA landscape architect on their designs.
