Chlorine Returns Temporarily for Spring Cleaning of Water

Part of the D.C. region’s drinking water is about to undergo its annual spring cleaning, so get ready to notice the smell and taste of chlorine in tap water.

Beginning Monday and continuing through April 28, the disinfectant in drinking water for D.C., Arlington County and northeast Fairfax County will be switched temporarily from chloramine to chlorine.

People may notice a slight change in the taste and smell of tap water.

Experts recommend running the cold water for about 2 minutes, using a water filter or refrigerating water to reduce the chlorine taste.
