Child Killed in Crash in Cottage City, Md.

A young child died in a crash in Cottage City, Md., Thursday evening.

An SUV headed south on Bladensburg Road clipped a car near 38th Avenue, causing the SUV to spin out of control and leave the roadway. It struck a telephone pole and a tree before coming to a stop at 37th Place.

Authorities say speed was likely a factor in the crash, News4's Shomari Stone reported.

A child in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the victim was about four years old. The driver of the car and another child in it, under the age of 8,  were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Just looking at the condition of the vehicle, it's a tragedy, any time you see an accident like this," said Major Rob Brewer of Prince George's County Police.  "Any time there's a loss of life, it's horrifying for officers and obviously family members to experience something like this."

No one in the car that was clipped was injured.
