Child Abuse Trial Set for Ex-Priest in September

The trial for a retired Catholic priest facing child abuse charges has been set for this fall.

Monsignor Thomas Bevan, 73, of Cascade, waived his right to a trial within 180 days of being charged during a pretrial conference Friday in Frederick County Circuit Court, according to the Frederick News-Post. His trial is scheduled for Sept. 28.

Bevan was indicted in January on two counts of child abuse. State prosecutors said Bevan sexually abused an altar boy in 1976 when he was associate pastor of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Frederick.

Bevan has denied the allegations.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore removed Bevan in August as pastor of the Church of St. Patrick in Cumberland.
