Charles County Public Schools Open Following Threat

Charles County Public Schools will be open Monday following a threat a student made during an argument.

A spokeswoman for the school district said two students got into an argument at North Point High School on Friday, and one made a "broad, violent threat."

School officials say that the threat was very broad and could have been against the student or the school. Out of an abundance of caution, they worked with the sheriff's department over the weekend to investigate it.

School officials also met with the student and his parents over the weekend. The student will meet with school administrators and officers Monday. It's not yet clear whether he will be disciplined.

"When school administrators learned about the possible threat, we contacted police and the students' parents. We take all threats seriously, and take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of our staff and students," the school's principal, Michael Simms, wrote in a letter to parents. "Please talk with your students and children about the severity of making threats and the disruption they cause even when they are not sincere or said in the heat of the moment."
