84-Year-Old Basilica Volunteer Dies After Being Struck By Car After Christmas Eve Mass

A Virginia woman struck by a car after attending Christmas Eve Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in northeast D.C. died Wednesday.

Marcelina Yanez, 84, of Manassas was not in a crosswalk as she crossed Michigan Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. Dec. 24, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. She crossed three westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes before she was struck by a 2009 Honda Civic.

The driver remained at the scene.

Yanez volunteered at the Basilica.

“She had more life in her than some people half her age,” said Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, who celebrated the 5 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass she attended. “She was not slow motion. She liked to talk about the fact that this shrine was her life and how good life was to her.”

Rossi will preside over her funeral Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in northeast D.C.
