An 8-year-old boy brought a loaded gun to his elementary school in St. Mary's County, Maryland, police say.
A school official at Park Hall Elementary School found a semi-automatic handgun in the boy's book bag after another student alerted a staff member about the gun, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said.
The boy found the gun at his home, which is at an off-base military housing community, the sheriff's office said. Both of his parents are active-duty service members.
Deputies arrested the boy and charged him as a juvenile with having a handgun, bringing a dangerous weapon on school property and disturbing school operations.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating how the student had access to the gun.
