Twenty-one vehicles were involved in a crash in Arlington County, Virginia, Tuesday night during rush hour.
Virginia State Police said a driver was heading north on Interstate 395 when he experienced a medical emergency around 6:25 p.m. and lost control of his vehicle. His SUV began bumping into other northbound vehicles, causing a chain-reaction crash over a five mile stretch of the interstate.
Police said the SUV was boxed in by traffic and came to a stop at Exit 10C. A majority of the vehicles only had minor damage, but eight had to be towed from the scene.
The driver, 57, from Alexandria, Virginia, was transported to a hospital for his serious medical condition and minor injuries sustained in the crashes. Investigators said he is not being charged due to the circumstance of the medical emergency.
Three other people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. All lanes were reopened shortly before 9 p.m.
