A 2-year-old boy is in the hospital Monday after he was shot while riding in a car early Sunday in Prince George’s County, Maryland, the victim’s mother says.

A bullet went through the toddler’s back and chest, but he is expected to survive.

The child’s mother described her heartbreak.

“It shows that people is terrible. They don’t care about kids, they don’t care about nothing, honestly,” she told News4 by phone, asking not to use her name.

She said she was at work late Saturday and her boyfriend took her child to Crafty Crab Seafood on Silver Hill Road in District Heights, Maryland, for French fries. As he was taking the food to the car, there was an argument and shots were fired. The child was hit.

“He wasn’t aware of that until my son started screaming,” the mother said.

At 25th and Q streets SE in D.C., a driver with the wounded toddler in one arm was involved in a crash. D.C. police responded and rescued the child at about 12:25 a.m. Sunday, the department said.

The car was still at the crash scene Monday, with bullet holes in side and the back window shot out. Glass could be seen in the back seat.

The mother said her son is stable, walking and talking. She said she wants justice for him.

“I want justice for my baby. Even I deserve this. All kids are innocent, she said.

A number of security cameras could be seen in the area of the shooting.

No information on a suspect was immediately released.
