Two dogs were discovered decapitated in a wooded area of Mechanicsville, Maryland, on Sunday, authorities say.

A deputy with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office found the black Labrador retrievers in the 40400 block of Parlett Morgan Road while responding to a call about animal cruelty in the area.

Animal Control also came to the scene and determined the dogs were discarded within the last 48 hours of when they were discovered.

The labs weighed more than 80 pounds each.

Police are asking anyone who may know something to call Deputy First Class Rachael Roszell at 301-475-4200 extension *8108 or email rachael.roszell@stmarysmd.com.
