Virginians looking to renew their identification cards or licenses have to wait a little longer. The Department of Motor Vehicles said it is still not able to process driver's licenses and identification cards because Virginia's governmental computer problems are not fixed yet.
The DMV is one of the several agencies affected by the major crash of the state's centralized computers that were plagued with problems last week.
The Virginia Information Technologies Agency has been having issues trying to restore computers in at least 24 agencies and one-fifth of the state government. As of Monday morning, all but three agencies' systems were back up and running.
Residents whose identification cards or licenses expired between last Wednesday and Monday are not in the clear yet. Those who will be renewing their cards will still face some difficulty after service has been restored. August is typically one of the DMV's busiest months, and the notoriously long lines may get a little bit longer once this problem has been solved.
Part-time staff will be utilized in order to try to meet increased service demands. Those impacted must renew their cards in person as soon as computer service has been restored. To renew their information, residents must bring a birth certificate, passport or other document to confirm citizenship or legal residency.
Some residents may be eligible to renew their licenses through another service option. This will be indicated on the renewal notice. Customers can call 888-337-4782, the automated telephone system.
