National Christmas Tree Lighting and Pageant of Peace
Dates: Opening ceremony varies, but display stays up throughout December
Time: Varies
Location: The Ellipse (south of the White House)
More Info: National Christmas Tree Program
The Skinny: The lighting of the National Christmas Tree is, without question, one of the most popular holiday events in the District. The tree stays up throughout the holiday season and is open to the public. Surrounding the main tree are smaller trees dedicated every state, the District of Columbia and some U.S. territories. On some nights, you can catch holiday performances by different musical groups.
An insider's tip: Pay close attention to each of the small trees. Each one is decorated with ornaments particularly meaningful to that state or locality. Also, a fire that burns for nighttime visitors creates even more of a holiday atmosphere.
Restaurant Week

An insider's tip: Call early. The most popular restaurants are booked well in advance. Also, check out what is on each eatery’s “restaurant week” menu beforehand. If you order something that isn’t on that menu, you’ll end up paying full price.
