Real Ovi, Wax Ovi To Face Off

Last week it was announced that Alex Ovechkin would be getting his own wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Washington D.C. On Tuesday, Ovi times two becomes a reality.

He is only the second NHL player to be immortalized in wax, following hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. As we all know, Ovi’s face is quite distinctive, and the artists certainly had their work cut out for them.

From the release:

Ovechkin was an eager participant in the creation of his wax figure, spending hours with a team of Madame Tussauds studio artists, who joined him in Arlington, V.A. earlier this year to take more than 250 precise measurements and photographs — capturing him from every angle.  The team of artists has been working since July to ensure the figure fully captures his unique style, exact eye color, build and overall allure, including his captivating smile (missing tooth and all).

He will meet his wax doppelganger face to face on Tuesday at 2 p.m., and fans in attendance will get the once in a lifetime chance to see double the Ovi.

And speaking of that missing tooth, children from the Ft. Dupont Ice Hockey Club will pose alongside Ovechkin and his wax figure figure sporting “blacked-out-tooth smiles”.

UPDATE: Due to a death in the family, Ovechkin will be traveling back to Moscow this week. Tuesday's event is being postponed. Our thoughts are with the Ovechkin family.
