Pop-Up Shop Gets Crafty on H Street N.E.

Temporium Creates Opportunity for Local Artists

Garage sale. Sidewalk sale. Trunk show.

They got nothin' on the Temporium (1300 H St. N.E.). Instead, this pop-up fashion show features items from local artists and designers -- and it'll last for almost two weeks before the last shoppers haul their bags away.

The temporary artists' bazaar aims to aid community building and promote economic development in an area that's struggled financially. However, H Street now seems to be on the upswing, with dozens of new restaurants and bars, although shops have been slower to arrive.

The entity behind the pop-up shop, the Pink Line Project, is a local organization promoting artistic expression throughout the city. The group calls itself a "catalyst for the culturally curious."

Featured local designers and sellers include Dopeville (street art-inspired tees, pictured), De*Nada (vintage-style knits and accessories), Uesagoods (dressed-up vintage), Hugh & Crye (men's dress shirts), and Mishi (sterling silver and gemstone jewelry).

In a city where the price of rent often dissuades designers from opening their own stores, the Temporium is an opportunity to show off their wares without worrying about the price of rent.

"I would love to open a store, but it's not feasible at this time," designer Dana Ayanna Greaves told the Washington Post. "So this is a great way for me to explore it further."

The arrangement should prove to be mutually beneficial. Ten percent of artists' proceeds will go to fix up the space housing the Temporium, previously the R.L. Christian Library. A $20,000 grant from the District will also help out.

The Temporium runs through Aug. 15, Thur.-Fri. 6-10 p.m.; Sat. 2-10 p.m., and Sun. noon-5 p.m. You'll also find Wi-Fi, live music and more.
