Because it is the NHL playoffs, in case of ties, there can be multiple overtimes, and a winner isn’t decided until a goal is scored. There are no shootout victories in the playoffs.
The Caps have played in two playoff games that went to four overtimes in the team’s history. In 1996, they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth overtime in a game that lasted 79 minutes, 15 seconds.
In 1987, the Islanders and Caps took their Game 7 match into the fourth overtime before the Isles won. The game has the nickname of the Easter Epic, because the game started on Saturday night and did not finish until Easter Sunday. It is also the longest Game 7 in Stanley Cup playoff history.
