Adu Scores First Senior U.S. Goal

by Michael Cardillo

Here's the quick-fire, must-know facts from the U.S. National Team's 2-0 victory over Guatemala in nearly meaningless CONCACAF World Cup qualifier Wednesday night in Commerce City, Colo.

1. Kenny Cooper scored on an assist from Jozy Altidore.

2. Freddy Adu scored his first senior international goal on a very nice, curling free kick from the edge of the penalty area in the second half. Considering all the hype around Adu his entire professional career, it was a fitting way for him to score his first goal. This just in -- Freddy is good.

Other than that, not a ton to take from this match. The U.S. had already qualified into the final 'Hexagonal' CONCACAF group. They'll be matched up with Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica. The matches begiin in 2009. The top three teams from this group move onto to South Africa in 2010. Fourth place gets a playoff with an Asian runner-up.

The U.S. will probably return to action in January, likely against Sweden. Hopefully when that match rolls around, Adu will be in the starting XI.
