PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) — The city of Petersburg is seeking state aid as it deals starts the new fiscal year off with an estimated $7.5 million budget deficit.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://goo.gl/yauOCp ) that part of the city’s deficit includes $2 million owed to the city’s public school system.
Petersburg financial troubles have been long running. The city council fired the city manager in March, and the city attorney resigned on the same day. The city’s finance director left in April.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s spokesman said the state will help by first conducting an assessment of the city’s finances.
