PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A prosecutor in Virginia will soon decide if criminal charges are merited after a mentally ill man died in jail last year.
The prosecutor’s office in Portsmouth, Virginia, said Friday that state police have completed their investigation into the death of 24-year-old Jamycheal Mitchell. Prosecutor Stephanie Morales will now review their report and related evidence before issuing a “final prosecutorial determination.”
Mitchell had been jailed on charges he stole junk food from a 7-Eleven. He was ordered to a mental hospital, but was never sent there. His paperwork was stuffed in a desk. He died about four months later of heart failure accompanied by severe weight loss.
Mitchell’s family filed a $60 million lawsuit alleging physical abuse and withholding food. The jail has said officials never mistreated or ignored Mitchell.
