New App Lets Users Wander C&O Canal Park Without Getting Lost

WASHINGTON — If you love the outdoors but have a terrible sense of direction, there’s an app for that.

Visitors of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park can now use an app to navigate the attractions of its 19,000-plus acres. The park runs through Maryland, D.C. and West Virginia, and offers hiking and horse riding trails, opportunities to observe wildlife and more.

Curious hikers and wandering observers can now use the app on their phones to help them navigate. Created by the C&O Canal Trust, a nonprofit partnered with the national park, the app allows users to search for trails, historic sites, parking and more.

Also, it gives the user the ability to calculate where the nearest amenity or point of interest is.

Titled “C&O Canal Explorer,” the app is available for 99 cents, a C&O Trust statement says. The trust has plans to make the app more useful too, including a downloadable map that can be used when a hiker is out of cell range.

According to the National Park Service, parks are creating apps to help visitors navigate their vast expanses and help with activity planning.
