Middleburg Vineyard Will Make Its Own Cheese

WASHINGTON — Wine and cheese are a classic pairing, and Middleburg, Virginia’s Chrysalis Vineyards plans to add locally crafted cheeses to the menu.

Chrysalis Vineyards, founded in 1997, says it will invest $478,000 and create 12 new jobs by adding a creamery and bakery to its operation, giving visitors the chance to buy locally-produced cheeses, breads and wines on site.

Chrysalis says it will purchase 100 percent of its agricultural inputs from Virginia farmers.

As part of the expansion, the vineyard will get a $24,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund.

“Over the last decades, unfortunately, much of the farming activity in the county has waned,” said Chrysalis Vineyards owner Jennifer McCloud.

“This grant supports our mission to help restore this essential use of our lands.”

Chrysalis Vineyards, off John Mosby Highway just east of downtown Middleburg, is the largest producer of the native Virginia Norton grape.
