Metro Worker Falls Into Bethesda Shaft

WASHINGTON — A Metro worker who fell down a shaft in Bethesda, Maryland, was rescued early Thursday.

Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer says the man fell to the bottom of the Elm Street vent shaft on Wisconsin Avenue, about 20 or 30 feet.

Rescuers pulled him to the surface around 1:30 a.m. He sustained several injuries, including a hurt leg and exposure to the cold, but he’s expected to be OK.
