Driver in Fatal Old Town Pedestrian Crash Charged

WASHINGTON — The 92-year-old driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Old Town Alexandria earlier this week was charged with reckless driving Wednesday.

Leonard Wainstein, a 92-year-old Fairfax resident, was charged with two counts of reckless driving Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning, Wainstein — who was attempting to park his car near the 100 block of S. Fairfax Street — backed into a parking attendant, police said. After hitting the attendant, he accelerated forward into Swift Alley and hit another pedestrian, Jeremais Herrera Rodriguez, 44, according to police.

The parking attendant was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wainstein stayed at the scene, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Alexandria Police are asking that people with information regarding this incident call them at 703-746-6873.
