Democratic Leader Calls for Harrisonburg Mayor's Resignation

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — The head of Harrisonburg’s Democratic party has called on Mayor Christopher Jones to resign after it was revealed that Jones owes the IRS $58,000 in back taxes.

Jones says he made a mistake, he’s fixing it, and he’ll continue to represent Harrisonburg residents.

Debra Fitzgerald tells local media outlets Wednesday that the party would not have nominated Jones had his tax issues been known.

The Daily News-Record reported this week that the IRS had filed a lien against Jones for failing to pay taxes on income earned from 2011 to 2013.

Fitzgerald tells WHSV-TV that Jones is competent but it will be difficult for him to have credibility in dealing with the city’s tax issues.

Jones, an account executive at WHSV, tells the station that many constituents have pledged to support him.
