Ambitious cyclists will pedal through all 50 states this weekend. That is... all 50 state streets in the District.
The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is hosting the 50 States and 13 Colonies Ride Saturday, Sept. 24.
During the 50 States Ride, participants will take in city sights during a 60+ mile bike ride to discover all 50 state streets in all eight wards of the District. Although pit stops are available with food, drinks and a bike mechanic, this extensive ride -- now sold out -- is recommended for the more experienced and comfortable bike riders who don't mind sharing the road with local drivers.
Those who aren't quite a cycling pro can tackle the 13 Colonies Ride instead, pedalling down the streets named for -- well, you can probably follow the logic on this one. That ride stretches a little less than 15 miles.
The tour is self-supported, with directions (known as cue sheets) available to riders, and no roads will be shut down for the ride. All cyclists are encouraged to bring a detailed map of D.C. along with these suggested items in case of emergency:
- Pump and/or CO2 cartridge
- Patch kit or extra tubes
- Additional food and water
- Cell phone
- Money for Metrorail or bus in case you need to end the ride early
- A bike lock (in case you stop along the ride)
The official after-party will be hosted by New Belgium Brewing at the Grill from Ipanema (1858 Columbia Road N.W.). Beer, food and other goodies will be available from 3 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the day's activities.
Missed registration? Well, you'll have plenty of time to begin training for next year.
