The sketch comedy company whose alumni include Bill Murray, Steve Carell and Amy Poehler will soon perform shows and offer workshops in D.C.

The Second City is partnering with the Kennedy Center, in the latest addition to D.C.’s comedy scene.

The group's first show will debut this summer, the center said in a statement issued Tuesday. The group also is set to offer improv and stand-up comedy workshops for adults and children.

“Washington audiences have an insatiable appetite for smart and witty humor,” Kennedy Center president Deborah Rutter said in the statement. “We can all look forward to the fresh stories and big laughs that will emerge from this new relationship with The Second City.”

Information about the workshops is set to be released at the District of Comedy Festival scheduled for March 20. A holiday-themed performance will be announced April 10.

Second City will produce six original sketch shows that are expected to run for several weeks at the Kennedy Center’s Theater Lab and during summers and the holidays through at least 2020. It also will develop full-length performances that could tour in places other than D.C. and Chicago.

Second City -- which now has programs in Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto -- first opened in Chicago in 1959 and has grown to become one of the most influential comedy groups in the country.
