Devito: “Always Sunny” Has Added Years to My Life

Veteran actor stay young at heart

Legendary actor Danny Devito is mixing it up with his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars and loving every minute of it.

“These guys from Always Sunny have added so many years to my life,” said Devito about costars half his age. “What am I gonna do just sit on the porch and get bit by mosquitoes and wait for the ice cream man to come around?”

Instead of going into retirement the 65-year-old actor keeps doing what he loves. Devito was in South Philly back in June to shoot some scenes for the upcoming sixth season of FX’s cult hit.

Devito, who was nominated for an Oscar as a producer, raised some eyebrows when he jumped back from the silver screen to the small screen to join the fledgling Always Sunny for it’s second season. Since he joined on the show has grown in popularity and made bigger stars of Devito’s cohorts.

Why does he do it?

“You gotta get out and do stuff,” he said as he took a break on a hot day.

But don’t think the AARP-aged Hollywood legend always acts his age around the rest of the ASIP gang including Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton.

“I’m more like a combination of an instigator and a father but I like to think of myself as a brother,” he said

“Sometimes I let the father figure stuff go because I’m too excited about the craziness that we’re going to do and I allow myself to instigate really crazy things that we shouldn’t be doing.”

The small statured actor didn’t elaborate on that one but did explain what he likes to do.

“I like to have a party,” he said with a smile. “I like to drink, I like to carry on, I like to flirt with the pretty girls, I like to hang out, you know, and if it’s a dance party, I like to dance to.”

Devito’s love to dance (and rave next to nearly topless women for that matter) was on full display at Coachella earlier this year where he was caught on tape jamming out to Deadmau5. He explained what it was all about.

“I think you have to keep doing those things no matter how old you get,” he said.

“I’m a big fan of all kinds of music, I’ve got eclectic tastes,” he said with a smirk. “I could see Rigoletto at the Met or Deadmau5 at Coachella,” he said with a laugh.

Other music on Devito’s playlist includes some bluegrass, Bob Dylan, Mike Patton and even Bjork.

“Anything that tickles my fancy.”

Philly is a place that always has tickled Devito’s fancy. He has been coming to the City of Brotherly Love since as a boy used to tag along with his dad as the senior Devito would shoot pool in Philly.

Along the way Devito got a taste for Philly cuisine.

“I’m a foodie... I like to eat authentic food,” he said as he listed everything from Termini Brothers pastries to vegetarian Chinese food amongst his favorites.

And what goes best with food?

Devito’s own limoncello, duh.

But the sweet treat comes with a warning from its namesake.

“It is 60 proof so I want to say don’t get out and drive around after you’ve drank some,” Devito said.

A lesson learned the hard way, he said with a laugh.

Devito (his tight jeans?) and the gang return to the small screen Thursday night at 10 p.m. on FX.
